Master’s and Ph.D. Research at Newhouse

Research what interests you.

Media is an integral part of our lives. It shapes our perspectives, influences our decisions and reflects the world in which we live.

You know all the things you wonder about? We think about them, too, at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

  • How can we better identify fake news and detected manipulated media?
  • What is the role of social media influencers?
  • Can a music genre shape identity?
  • How have video games changed the world?

Get your master’s in media studies.

It’s a program designed to help you learn to think in new ways and answer questions about the role of the media in society. Our two-year, research-oriented program will teach you to investigate contemporary media, and assess the media’s relationship with the world.

Pursue your Ph.D.

The mass communications Ph.D. program is an interdisciplinary degree rooted in social and behavioral sciences. It focuses on research and teaching.

When it comes to media, our faculty is interested in all of it. At Newhouse you can pursue your interests, including pop culture, social media, generative AI and misinformation, and extended-reality storytelling and the impact on video games. No matter the topic, we have engaged faculty who look forward to working with you.
